Catalina Island

June 27 – July 1, 2026 · Avalon, California

Where it all began

A love story, 87 years in the making

In 1939, Sue’s parents met right here in Avalon. Her dad came home and told his mother he’d met a cute little blonde on the island and he was going to marry her. His mother said, “Oh no, you are not going to marry some cute little blonde that you just met in Catalina.”

But he’d made up his mind. They married in 1940.

For over 20 years now, Sue and Lee have kept that tradition alive — bringing the family together on this island for reunions that everyone looks forward to all year. Cory Ross has picked up the tradition for his own family, and Cousin Rob Potts has been joining in for the last several years, helping raise the next generation of chess players and island adventure seekers.

On June 30th, Lee & Sue celebrate 64 years of marriage.

Ferry to paradise — settle in — first sunset dinner

Did you know?

The ferry crossing is a wildlife show. Common dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, and Risso's dolphins regularly play alongside the boat. Keep your cameras ready — whale sightings are common too!

Local tip

Order a "Buffalo Milk" at any bar on the island. This creamy blended cocktail was invented at Two Harbors in the 1970s and became Catalina's signature drink. Every bartender knows it!
